Writing Matters! is an online, virtual
version of the Open Institute, ASWC’s introductory
course designed to orient teachers to creating a balanced
writing program drawn from their own experience with the
craft of writing and research into effective practice. As
an online course, Writing Matters! is designed to take advantage
of ongoing teaching, and the opportunities provided by electronic
technologies centered
around the real, ongoing writing work of your classroom.
This synchronous course will have regular
deadlines for the submission of work as well as required
audio and on-line conferences. The
course content, assignments, and due dates will all be provided
online. (This is not a self-paced correspondence course.) Enrollment
is open now and is limited to 20.)
To register and reserve your space:
- Verify that your district is current
in its ASWC membership. If your district is not current
with its membership, please contact your district office.
An email note to Dorothy Gray at aswc@atln.jun.alaska.edu
from an administrator signifying an intent to complete
membership paperwork will suffice. (If your district does
not intend to join this year, you can be placed on a waiting
list. If space allows, and
you are willing to pay the $375 course fee, we will notify
you.)
- Complete
the attached pre-registration form and fax it, with your credit card information (or
other payment instructions), to 907-776-5220.
- The course fee of $175 must be included
when you send in your ASWC pre-registration on the next
page. Teachers
who drop the class anytime after January 12, 2007,
will be charged the $175 fee.

Teacher Leader: Patricia Truman
This brand new course taught by veteran teacher and current executive director of the Alaska Professional Practices in Teaching Commission, Pat Truman, is an interactive, online workshop where participants will have the opportunity to discuss research and best practices on the teaching and learning of writing. Additionally, participants will respond to issues raised by research, analyze texts, assessments, and collaboratively design best practice, classroom applications.
The foundational texts for this course are Because Writing Matters: Improving Student Writing in Our Schools (National Writing Project and Carl Nagin) and Best Practice: Today’s Standards for Teaching & Learning in America’s Schools (Third Edition).
